Backroads of Sichuan

    Escorted by Peter Wood,discover the largest residential area of Yi minority people in China,explore the only matriarchal area and learn about their matriarchal system in Lugu,which Joseph Rock made adopted hometown.See satellite launch center where many statellites have been sent into orbit by world-famous "Long March" rockets.With a naturalist trek into the heart of Wanglang Reserve to know more secrets of wild pandas and scrub vegetations.Hike in Wuyipeng with panda experts,learn how they carry out their reseach and investigation.Cycling tour of Huanglongxi,an over-1000-year-old town,enjoy rurual views that distinguish from modern cities.

    D1:Arrive Chengdu,the bustling queen city of West China and capital city of Sichuan Province.Transfer to the hotel.This evening celebrate your arrival with a Sichuan Food dinner.As an option,see a wonderful performance of 'Face changing 'and 'Flame Spitting -Out' of Sichuan Opera.

    Overnight in Chengdu(D)

    D2:Fly to Xichang,capital of Liangshan Yi Minority Autonomous Prefecture,known as Spaceflight City.Arrive Xichang .See Lake Qionghai , natural fishery and water sportsground. Explore the subtropical evergreen spruce and broadleaf forest at Mt.Lushan,marvel at the architectural complex of Guangfu Temple in front of which there grows a 2000-year-old cypress with the trunk 30 feet in girth.

    Overnight in Xichang

    D3: Travel to Lugu,the only matriarchal system that still works well in China. While enjoying rural scenery of West China,en route see Yi minority villages.Observe daily life on the walking tour and photograph interesting things. Late afternoon arrival of Lugu.Check in the hotel. In the evening attend the welcome party by Muosuo minority.Join them in dancing and singing around the "Guozhuang(traditional bonfire for happiness,a good harvest or other exciting things)".According to their tradition, every guset has to drink three bowls of Zajiu(a trditional wine made from a mixture of highland barley,corn and grains) expressing his friendliness.

    D4:Explore Lake Lugu with 8300 feet above sea level.Enjoy boat-rowing to the islands in the middle of Lake ,where Joseph Rock lived many years,known as Rock Island .Marvel at the mesmerising scenes around this Matriarchal Area.Visit Muosuo minority families and learn about their folkways and why they keep this unique matriarchal system.Especially,uncover the mystery of their "husband's walking marriage". At leisure for walking tour of Lugu Town.

    D5:Head back to Xichang.On the way back we'll stop at a small town for lunch.Also,do a little bit walking tour while talking to the local people. Arrive Xichang.Check in the hotel for a good rest.Leisure time for personal interests.

    D6:Fly to Chengdu.See Wuhou Temple,the memorial to Zhugeliang,prime minister of Shu Kingdom in era of the Three Kingdoms. Browse Jinli,a fascinating place for walking ,together with lots of old-style architecture in Ming and Qing Dynasties.

    D7:Depart for Mianyang via Guanghan.See Sanxingdui Archaeology Museum.This excellent museum features bronze work,jadewares,gold and silver wares dating 3,000B.C.After lunch ,travel to Mianyang,the second biggest city in Sichuan , is konwn as 'science and elcetronics 'city.It boasts the largest TV factory and high-tech companies.Our hotel is located in the hi-tech development zone.At leisure for exploration of hi-tech area.

    D8: Journey to Wanglang Nature Reserve .Arrive Baima Village , where most of Baima ethnic minority live.Enjoy welcome lunch by Baima people.Join them in dancing and singing.After village tour and a visit to a local school,travel along the Baima River to the Headquarters of Wanglang Nature Reserve.

    Overnight in Wanglang

    D9: Wanglang is a nature reserve for a good protection of wild giant pandas ,monals,blue-eared pheasants,golden cats and some other rare wild animals.In the morning watch birds in the forest .Then the reserve jeeps take us deep into the reserve.With a naturalist,enjoy hiking in the virgin forests with chances to see wildflowers, plants, some wild animals and photograph them.

    Overnight in Wanglang

    D10:Travel to Jiangyou, hometwon of Libai,great poet of Tang Dynasty(618AD—907AD). See the memorial of Libai ,known as "poet immortal ". Also tour Jiangyou City on the pedicabs.

    Overnight in Jiangyou

    D11:Depart for Wolong.En route,see the oldest irrigation system,Dujiangyan, that's still in use.Also witness a over-1,700-year-old ginko,called longevity tree in Daoism.Afternoon arrival of Wolong,world-famous panda reserve.

    Overnight in Wolong

    D12:This morning,grasp the best time to see pandas and learn about their breeding program by meeting experts.Hike to Wuyipeng, the key wild panda research center where both Chinese and foreign experts have done their investigations and research. Through the virgin forest ,marvel at supernatural beauty of this excellent panda's habitat. After a picnic lunch,visit Panda Museum to learn about panda's development history.

    Overnight in Wolong

    D13: Today explore Huanglongxi,an old town known as Chengdu's Hollywood.See old residences constructed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties along the slab-paved streets.On the walking tour ,observe the daily life of local people.Cruise Qiuxi River with nice rural views. For our shore excursion , explore old buddhist temple and photograph a 1000-year-old cypress.As an option,cycling tour of the countryside around Huanglongxi.
